What Is a CPT Attention Test? Sustained Attention and Online Limits

What CPT stands for
CPT usually refers to a Continuous Performance Test. It presents a stream of signals over time and asks the participant to respond to some targets while withholding responses to others. Because the task continues, it can place demands on sustained attention, vigilance, response consistency, and inhibition.
A useful report should separate hits, misses, false alarms, correct rejections, and response time. A single total score can hide whether a person responded too cautiously, missed targets, or pressed too often. Signal frequency, interval length, target difficulty, instructions, and the device all change the task.
Why online results need care
Browser timing and distractions matter more as a task becomes longer. A tired session, background notification, small screen, or unfamiliar rule can affect performance. Repeat the same version under similar conditions, record the context, and compare your own pattern over time. Do not compare results from different CPT designs as if they were interchangeable.
An online CPT exercise is not a diagnosis of ADHD, cognitive decline, or any other condition. If attention or functioning is a health concern, use an appropriately validated assessment with a qualified professional. The HumanSpec science and limitations page explains this scope clearly.
For a broader method, read How to build a personal performance baseline and use the benchmarks as orientation points rather than population norms.
